WASHINGTON, D.C. — With new polling showing Democrats leading in key battleground states and bracing for what analysts are calling a “highly favorable” 2026 midterm environment, party leadership is reportedly in full panic mode.
According to multiple sources, the Democratic National Committee has quietly assembled an emergency task force charged with one critical objective: figuring out how to lose.
“We are deeply concerned,” said one senior strategist, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to admit this out loud. “If these trends continue, we could accidentally win multiple competitive races. And then… we’d have to govern.”
The committee, formally titled the Strategic Electoral Self-Sabotage Working Group, includes a who’s-who of historically underperforming Democratic leadership. Among those tapped to guide the effort are former Vermont Governor Howard Dean, former Vice President Al Gore, Senator John Kerry, and former California Governor Gray Davis. The group is co-chaired by Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Hillary Clinton.
“Experience matters in moments like this,” Clinton reportedly told donors. “We’ve been in this position before—polling well, feeling confident, and then finding a way to absolutely blow it.”
📉 Returning to Proven Tactics
Early meetings have focused on revisiting time-tested strategies that have helped Democrats turn promising elections into disappointing outcomes for decades.
Among the ideas under consideration:
● Taking key voter blocs for granted, described internally as “the Hillary Protocol”
● Unforced verbal errors, including the strategic deployment of poorly timed or awkwardly racist remarks - a la Joe Biden.
● Policy overreach messaging, inspired by the Walter Mondale approach of “just say you’re raising taxes on the middle class and get it over with”.
● Overconfidence combined with poor ground game, a perennial favorite
“History gives us a roadmap,” said one committee member. “We just have to follow it.”
🏄 Targeting Rising Candidates
The committee is also working to neutralize candidates who appear to be gaining traction with voters.
Texas Democrat Senate candidate, James Talarico, currently polling strongly in his race to flip Texas blue, has reportedly been flagged as a “high-risk success scenario.”
In response, the DNC has assembled a rapid-response team led by veterans of John Kerry’s 2004 campaign to “humanize” Talarico through carefully staged optics.
Sources confirm the first phase of the plan involves placing Talarico on a windsurfing board “as soon as possible. We want voters to feel something’s… off,” one strategist explained. “Not in a big way. Just enough.”
⚠️ A Party on Edge
Despite the aggressive planning, some insiders worry that even their best efforts may not be enough to derail the party’s momentum.
“There’s always the fear we could still win,” one official admitted. “And then we’d be stuck trying to fix things. That’s not really our brand.”
The committee was reportedly considering a bold new strategy: running ads reminding voters how disappointed they’ve been in the past.
The committee's parting recommendation to all candidates was that they should immediately begin every constituent conversation by insisting on a detailed exchange of pronouns.
When asked for comment, former Vermont Governor Howard Dean simply said, "HhAaaaayyyyeeeeaaahhhhh!"
