Everybody on Delmarva Has the Best Corn Guy

Backyard Melee Breaks Out After Guests Arrive With Corn From Three Different "Best Corn Guys"

DELMAR — A peaceful Saturday afternoon cookout in Delmar turned into a full-scale family incident after a disagreement over the identity of the Eastern Shore's "best corn guy" escalated into what deputies described as "multiple food-related disturbances."

The trouble reportedly began when cousins Earl, Lloyd, and Chester Savage each arrived carrying fresh sweet corn from three different roadside stands, all insisting their longtime vendor was "the only corn guy worth buying from."

Witnesses said the disagreement remained mostly civil until Lloyd described Chester's preferred stand as "fine if you don't mind grocery store quality."

Deputies said voices were raised, lawn chairs were repositioned aggressively, and at least one ear of Silver Queen was thrown.

Authorities believed the situation had stabilized after family members reluctantly agreed that all three corn stands "probably had decent corn."

The ceasefire lasted approximately four minutes.

Tensions reignited when Aunt Marge unexpectedly arrived carrying pineapple pretzel salad, despite decades of family precedent establishing that Aunt Carol's strawberry pretzel salad was to be served at all major gatherings.

"She knew exactly what she was doing," one visibly shaken relative told investigators.

The argument quickly expanded to include whether pretzel salad should be served alongside dinner or reserved for dessert, whether fresh sweet corn should be grilled or boiled, whether the husk should remain on during cooking, whether pepper belongs on corn, and whether anyone under the age of 60 should be trusted to prepare it.

Deputies were preparing to leave when one unidentified guest referred to scrapple as "basically breakfast Spam."

Authorities described the next several minutes as "absolute chaos."

Things turned especially personal after another guest described Uncle Ralph as "an asshole" for putting Old Bay on his corn.

Police reported no serious injuries, though several family relationships were listed as "unlikely to recover."

Lloyd Savage was transported to Peninsula General Hospital to have three ears removed from different orifices.  Grandma was released on her own recognizance following an appearance before the duty magistrate.

Uncle Earl remained in custody Sunday evening at Sussex Correctional Institution on a $10,000 cash bond, though authorities declined to specify the charges beyond saying he "should've known better."

The cookout was suspended indefinitely after a neighbor wandered over carrying sweet corn from a fourth corn guy, prompting deputies to quietly return to their cruisers and request additional units.
